Jr. Book Club

Ages 7–11: Esperanza Ortega lives a privileged life on her family’s ranch with her parents and grandmother until tragedy strikes. Forced to leave her injured grandmother behind so the older woman can recover, Esperanza and her mother flee to California at the height of the Great Depression—and Esperanza’s entire world is turned upside down. Instead of having servants take care of her every need, Esperanza struggles to adapt to life in a farm camp. But when her mother falls ill, it is up to Esperanza to support the two of them and reunite them with her grandmother in Pam Muñoz Ryan’s Esperanza Rising. Attending all sessions of Jr. Book Club is not required, but is recommended.
