Ages 7–12: In Lauren Tarshis’ I Surived the Galveston Hurricane, 1900, eleven-year-old Charlie Miller had expected the early September storm to be like any other storm. He wasn’t the only one. Everyone in Galveston, a boomtown located on an island just off the southeastern tip of Texas, was used to storms, after all, and the best weather experts had declared that a hurricane would never hit the busy port city. Except by nightfall, the town had been slammed by massive waves and screaming winds. Will Charlie survive the deadliest natural disaster in American history?
