Ages 7–12: In Lauren Tarshis’ I Survived the San Francisco Earthquake, 1906, Leo Ross is a young newsboy trying to make his way in the rough streets of early 20th-century San Francisco. At first, he’s scrappy and independent, relying on quick thinking to get by. But when the devastating earthquake strikes, Leo is forced to face danger, loss, and unexpected responsibility.
